The city of Metz, Lorraine, is undoubtly heading towards the new information and telecommunications technologies. It was one of the first big French cities which installed a truly significant and economically viable cable tv network in 1979. It also was the first French city on the Web: its site was created in April 1995.
The "Technopôle Metz 2000" created in 1984 gathers universities and higher-education institutes (Supélec, Georgia Tech, Esidec, Ensam) as well as about 170 companies and research centers (TDF, INRIA, DAEWOO, etc.).
The peculiar location of Metz, in the heart of Europe and the Saar-Lor-Lux district is a major asset in this development. GUTenberg, the French LUG, has selected this place to host its first meeting of the 21st century as a landmark for its opening towards Europe. This meeting will gather the largest possible number of knowledgeable people in the filed of document processing, document handling, document formats, typography, fonts, and associated technologies and tools such as LATEX and the XML standard.
The meeting will take place at Supélec, a French higher-education institute in Electrical Engineering. Supélec is also a sponsor for the meeting.
